Donuts
- 1 cup flour
- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Glaze
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3-4 tablespoons
- Sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat a oven to 350 degrees and spray a donut pan with pam. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg and sugar. In a small saucepan, over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Allow butter to bubble and brown, 3 minutes. (Be careful not to burn which can happen quickly). In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk and vanilla extract. Add in 2 tablespoons of the browned butter (try and gather all the brown bits) and combine. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Try to not over mix as this will create rubbery donuts. Use a spoon to dollop into the pan and fill each mold 3/4 way with batter. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center come out clean. While the donuts are baking, make the glaze. In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, cocoa powder and salt. Add the vanilla extract and milk 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach desired consistency. Allow donuts to cool completely before dipping top-side down into the glaze. With the glaze still wet, sprinkle donuts with sprinkles and place in refrigerator for 30 minutes to harden the glaze. Great served room temperature or cold.
